    Frēoliċ

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS!?

    DIG:2003 #176
A skeleton in the bowl hole graveyard

What this skeleton told us: Evidence

An older man and 178 cm tall (5 feet 10 inches). Vertebrae of his spine are fused and the spine is straighter than normal (lacks the normal curves). This man is also a ‘bone former’ with many bones having new bone formation on them.

    Interpretation of the evidence

This tall older man could have stood out within the population at Bamburgh because of his very straight posture and height. ‘Bone formers’ are people that constantly make new bone. This may have led to stiffness and back pain and reduced his mobility.
